Aloha Bay: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Sustainability
Origins of Aloha Bay
Lighting Up Lower Lake, California
In 1993, Aloha Bay lit its very first candle factory in the serene town of Lower Lake, California. This 10,000 square-foot facility served as the birthplace of our journey, initially focused on crafting candles for the gift market before expanding into the realm of natural health products.
Bart Burger's Unique Candle Making Philosophy
At the helm of Aloha Bay, CEO Bart Burger introduced an unconventional approach to candle making. Rather than relying solely on automated factory systems, he championed the involvement of human hands in the process. This not only boosted employment rates but also enriched the fabric of Lower Lake, California.
A Solar Oasis in Indonesia
The Indonesian Connection
During a business expedition to Jakarta in 2001, Bart Burger crossed paths with two Indonesian entrepreneurs, Ong Wen Ping and Prananto Nugroho. Their enduring friendship and shared passion for culinary delights ignited the idea of establishing a candle factory together.
The Essence of Fair Trade
This Fair Trade factory in Indonesia operates with simplicity, devoid of heavy machinery, and relies on the skilled craftsmanship of locals. Java's renowned artisans play a pivotal role in crafting our products. Significantly, the wax is heated using solar power, embodying our commitment to sustainable practices. At Aloha Bay, "handmade" signifies more than just craftsmanship; it means more jobs, reduced crime, and flourishing villages.
Recognized for Social Impact
In 2012, our sister factory received the Social Impact Award from the European Union's Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI), a testament to Aloha Bay's dedication to making a positive societal and environmental impact.
Championing Conservation and Ethical Labor Practices
Ethical Palm Wax Sourcing
Aloha Bay takes a principled stance by abstaining from palm wax purchases from Indonesian companies linked to rainforest depletion in Borneo, Sumatra, and other regions. Instead, we opt for palm oil sourced from small, traditional plantations, preserving the heritage of villages. Our solution involves importing palm wax from environmentally responsible plantations in Malaysia and, in smaller quantities, from certified organic plantations in Brazil and now Colombia.
Palm Oil in Perspective
- Perennial, organically farmed trees without yearly soil tilling or biodiversity decline.
- A heritage crop: GMO and pesticide-free.
- Reduced machinery, increased rural employment.
- Higher oil yield per acre, up to 10 times more than pesticide-intensive GMO soy.
H3: REACH-Compliant Candle Dyes
The Promise of Safe Dyes
Aloha Bay's vegetable dyes are 100% REACH-Compliant, aligning with the European Community's chemical regulation for safe use. These dyes steer clear of prohibited aryl amines, aromatic solvents, phthalates, and petrochemical additives. Composed of plant and mineral-based solvents, they seamlessly dissolve in all waxes, allowing for minimal dye use while delivering vivid colors.
Health and Safety Standards
All our candle ingredients hold FDA approval for food contact. We meticulously provide health and safety information in line with the US Code of Federal Regulations. Aloha Bay candles meet United States Clean Air Act standards, emitting no hazardous air pollutants or fumes, and contain no ingredients classified as hazardous substances or pollutants. Moreover, none of our ingredients undergo animal testing, reflecting our commitment to responsible practices.
The Himalayan Connection
A Himalayan Journey
Aloha Bay embarked on a Himalayan adventure in 2004, initiating the import of Himalayan Salt products from Pakistan. Our exclusive partnership thrives with a small, family-owned company situated near the Himalayan foothills.
Elevating Salt Lamp Craftsmanship
Aloha Bay's salt lamps stand as a testament to the unwavering dedication of Tariq Khokhar, the factory's owner/manager. His team exclusively crafts products for Aloha Bay, ensuring unwavering quality and intricate craftsmanship. Unlike many competitors, our tea light holders feature meticulous designs, elevating the aesthetic of salt lamps.
In Conclusion

Aloha Bay's illustrious journey spans 25 years, marked by a commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability. We remain resolute in our principles, advocating for fair trade, safeguarding ancient forests, and delivering top-quality products that enhance your living spaces.
